EU Parliament commits to new rules on packaging.
On the 22nd November 2023, the EU parliament adopted its position upon the Proposal for a regulation upon packaging and packaging waste (COM(2022) 677). The aim is to reduce the packaging and to restrict certain packaging types and even ban particular packaging such as very lightweight plastic carrier bags. Furthermore, reuse is to be encouraged and consumers have to have more refill options.
The MEP approved with 426 votes in favour, 125 against and 74 abstentions.
Once the Council adopts its position, the EU Parliament will start the talks with the national governments of the EU member states.
