Packaging labelling in Italy –

in force, but with exemptions.

The packaging labelling obligation based on the Decree Nr. 360 from the 28th September 2022 is in force since the 1st January 2023. Based on this regulation, packaging put onto the market in Italy needs to be labelled according to the specifications laid out in the Commission Decision 97/129/EC.

Any packaging that has been produced prior to the 1st January 2023 can be sold off until the stock is exhausted. The Italian regulator has put in place a differentiated system of labelling depending wether the packaging is targeting professional end users or consumers. The collective system CONAI has published a guide that explains the detailed options.

On the 26th January 2023, the Italian Environment Ministry has published a statement that excludes, however, the labelling obligations for specific products that are subject to the Energy Efficiency Labelling Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 and names specifically car tyres and electrical and electronic equipment.

The statement is available under the following link in Italian language.
